Quiz: Which Suspect Lied to Police about their Alibi for July 4th?
Hints: Lied About their Alibi
Hint #1
Read the witness statements and Evidence Collection forms to figure out each suspect's alibi for July 4th at 2pm. Note that Steve Marshall did not provide an alibi (or a witness statement), so you don't need to consider him for this task.
Hint #2
Walter also did not provide an alibi, so you don't need to consider him. The remaining suspects provided the following alibis:
- Barbara and Malcolm said they were at home, together.
- Lorraine also said she was at home.
- Colleen said she was at an ornament painting class at the Lapidary.
- Diane said she was at the parade.
- Focus on Colleen and Diane – they're the only two that provided alibis that can be confirmed or denied by other people (since they didn't say they were at home, like Barbara, Malcolm, and Lorraine did).
Hint #3
Diane provided "evidence" of her alibi to the police — examine the Evidence Collection form for Evidence #8135-8137 carefully.
Hint #4
Examine the following pieces of evidence carefully: the 4th of July Poster, the Map and the Saguaro Sands Newsletter.
Hint #5
The parade started at 2pm (according to the 4th of July Poster) and didn't start near the library (where Evelyn was murdered). If a suspect was at the parade when it started, this would be a good alibi.
Examine the parade pictures in the Saguaro Sands Newsletter carefully.
Solution
The Saguaro Sands Newsletter shows that the first residents who got to the parade got free flags. Diane said she was at the parade and got a free flag, but her flag does not look like the flags that were handed out at the parade (compare it to the picture of "Gary Holt" holding his flag in the Saguaro Sands Newsletter).
Diane lied about her alibi, and the two relevant pieces of evidence are the Small American Flag and the Saguaro Sands Newsletter.
